When it comes to transmissions, there are a few different types to choose from. You likely already know the difference between automatic and manual transmissions, and within the automatic transmission category, there are traditional transmissions with a set number of gears, as well the CVT transmission. But what exactly is a CVT, and which Buick and GMC models offer it? Our dealers at Peruzzi GMC explain.

CVT Transmission: A New Approach to Shifting

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that uses a belt and pulley system instead of fixed gears. This allows the CVT to seamlessly adjust to different driving conditions, which provides a driving experience that’s both smooth and efficient.

Traditional automatic transmissions shift through a set number of gears with noticeable steps, but CVTs adjust their gear ratios on the fly, which optimizes engine performance for acceleration, fuel efficiency, or both. Overall, vehicles equipped with CVT transmissions often have smoother acceleration and potentially better fuel economy.

Which Buick and GMC Models Have a CVT?

There are a couple of Buick and GMC models that offer a CVT. They include the 2025 Buick Envista, which is a stylish SUV that offers a powerful, fuel-efficient engine and sporty style. There’s also the 2025 Buick Encore GX, which has a CVT to go along with its available 1.3-liter turbocharged engine, available all-wheel-drive, and up to 1,000-lb towing capacity.

You’ll also find a CVT on the 2025 GMC Terrain Elevation. This compact SUV offers this type of transmission on its front-wheel-drive models, while the AWD models have an eight-speed automatic transmission.
