When you live in the Philadelphia area, having your car stuck in the snow is almost a rite of passage. This doesn’t make it any less frustrating, however. Here the GMC service center at Peruzzi Buick GMC offers some tips to help you deal with this situation:

Preventative Measures

You just never know when a storm will hit – or how much accumulation there will be – which is why it pays to prepare in advance. And while you may have everything you need at home, what would happen if your car got stuck at work or someplace else? This is why you should always travel with a shovel and things like salt or even kitty litter. You may also want to have snow tires put on your car.

Once Your Car is Stuck: Make a Path

When you discover that your car is firmly lodged in a block of snow, get out your shovel. You need to clear a path by removing as much snow as you can from around the tires and any that’s higher than the bumpers.

Rock the Car

Now, you’ll want to put the car in drive and then reverse so you can get more of a path cleared. Don’t floor the gas pedal. You just want to create some momentum so you can get the vehicle out of there.

Use the Kitty Litter

Remember that kitty litter you put in your car? It’s time to get it out. Putting this – or whatever you have available – around the tires can create the traction you need. Hopefully, this will be enough to get your car moving. If it’s close but not quite there, see if you can snag some folks to help you push.
