While full-size pickups – like the GMC Sierra 1500, for example – are excellent when it comes to towing, you don’t necessarily need such a big truck to get the job done. The GMC Canyon, while a compact model, still has very impressive towing ability.
Power
The base engine in the GMC Canyon is a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder unit that puts out 200 horsepower and 191 lbs.-ft. of torque. There are also two available engines. The 3.6-liter V6 generates 308 horsepower and 275 lbs.-ft. of torque, while the turbodiesel 2.8-liter, four-cylinder offers 181 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, but an eight-speed automatic is an option. Rear-wheel drive is also standard, but four-wheel drive is available.
Tow Rating
The towing ability of the base engine in the GMC Canyon isn’t too shabby; it will let you tow up to 3,500 pounds. With that V6, you’ll be able to double that to 7,000 pounds. And to unlock the most towing capability, you’ll want the turbodiesel, as this has a tow rating of 7,700 pounds.
Available Features
There are many things you can add to your GMC Canyon to get more out it, including:
- An integrated trailer brake controller
- A two-inch trailer hitch receiver
- LED bed lighting
- A locking rear differential
- An engine block heater
- Skid plates
- Rocker panel guards
- A spray-on bed liner
- Roll-up cover
- A suspension leveling kit
- A cat-back exhaust
Whether you want a truck for occasional towing, or this is something you’ll need to do often, the GMC Canyon could be perfect. To check it out in person and to take it for a test drive, come down to Peruzzi Buick GMC in Fairless Hills.
